The Legacy of the Kentucky Derby: A Race Like No Other

Every year, the first Saturday in May brings with it one of the most anticipated events in the sporting world: the Kentucky Derby. Dubbed "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports," the Derby has a rich history that dates back to 1875. Founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the Derby was inspired by horse racing traditions he witnessed in Europe.

Held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, the Derby has since become synonymous with not just thrilling horse racing, but also extravagant fashion, jubilant celebrations, and, of course, the refreshing Mint Julep.

The Mint Julep: A Southern Icon

While Bourbon has long been a staple of Southern culture, the Mint Julep emerged as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in the 1930s. This delightful cocktail, combining mint, sugar, and bourbon, became popular among the wealthy elite, who would gather at the Derby to socialize and enjoy the race. The drink's refreshing qualities made it a perfect accompaniment to the warm spring days of the Derby.

Legend has it that the Mint Julep has roots going back to the 18th century, originally served as a medicinal tonic. However, by the time it reached the Derby, it transformed into a symbol of Southern hospitality and tradition. Over the years, the Mint Julep has evolved, but it remains a staple at the Derby, with over 120,000 served each year.

A Refreshing Recipe with 10th Mountain Bourbon

This year, elevate your Derby experience with a Mint Julep made with 10th Mountain Bourbon. Here’s how to make this classic cocktail, ensuring you celebrate like a true Derby-goer!

Mint Julep Recipe

Ingredients:
- 10th Mountain Bourbon: 2 oz
- Fresh mint leaves: 10-12 leaves
- Simple syrup: 1/2 oz (or to taste)
- Crushed ice
- Fresh mint sprig for garnish

Instructions:
1. In a silver or chilled glass, muddle the fresh mint leaves with the simple syrup to release the oils. Be gentle; you want to release the mint's fragrance without tearing the leaves apart.

2. Fill the glass with crushed ice. Pour the 10th Mountain Bourbon over the ice, filling the glass to the top.

3. Stir gently to combine the flavors and chill the drink. Allow the glass to frost over as the ice does its magic.

4. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. Serve with a straw, and don’t forget to inhale the refreshing aroma before each sip.
